What does next best action mean in sales?
Published
A next best action in sales is a system-generated recommendation for the single most useful thing a seller could do next on an account or deal, based on the signals the system can see. It answers what to do, but not always whether it deserves attention today.
Where the idea comes from
Next best action arrived in sales from service and marketing, where a system observes a situation and proposes the most useful response. Applied to selling, it turns raw CRM signals — stage, activity, engagement, task state — into a suggested move.
The intent is sound. Sellers should not have to reconstruct context from scratch every morning to work out what a deal needs.
What a next best action typically looks like
- follow up on a proposal that has gone quiet;
- re-engage an account with no recent activity;
- confirm a next step after a meeting;
- reach a second contact in an opportunity with a single stakeholder.
Each is a reasonable thing to do. That is the point at which the difficulty starts.
A valid action is not automatically today's action
When a system produces a recommendation per account, a seller with forty accounts has forty valid recommendations and one morning. The prioritization problem has moved, not disappeared.
A recommendation can be reasonable and still not deserve today.
Sometimes the right next action is no action
A buyer says budgeting happens in September and asks to be contacted toward the end of August. A CRM task created in June goes overdue in July. Acting on the task is technically correct and commercially wrong.
A prioritization system that cannot decide to wait will keep producing that mistake at scale.
What to look for instead
- a finite daily set rather than a queue that refills;
- a concise reason attached to each recommendation;
- the ability to suppress action when timing says wait;
- corrections that a seller can make in one click when the system is wrong.
Twentto's position
Twentto is deliberately narrower than a general recommendation engine: it decides what deserves today and is willing to decide that the answer is nothing on an account. The full argument is on next best action in sales.
Twentto decides which sales actions genuinely deserve attention today, and explains why each one matters now.
